Through John Muir Award Week group of people who care abou nature and wildlife had a chance to experience, enjoy and care after wild spaces.
Wild spaces discovery started in Camley Street Natural Park, which is a small 2 ha oasis for wildlife just in the middle of London. We went through a nature trial, did winter twig identification, pond dipping (found water shrimps, water flea and saw a newt!!!), bird watch (saw robin, long-tailed tit, moorhens, geese, mallards). Seeing such a richness of different species in a quite small area made me to realise that people having even a small garden (or working in a community spaces) could give positive impact to wildlife´s richness.
Our wildlife conservation works started in a Mortimer Terrace. Our team created there new habitats for wildlife, cleared area from non-native plants (oh, there was lots of bramble, baddleja aka butterfly bush) to give space to native ones. We were also thought how to plant a tree.
I think that by John Muir Award Week has supported London wildlife by engaging new nature enthusiasts.
